A dash cam can record when the car is off, but only if the camera continues receiving power and its parking-mode configuration allows it to record. A dash cam connected only to a power source that switches off with the ignition will normally stop recording when that power disappears. Parking mode is not a power source — it is what the camera does once power is available. Someone clips your bumper in a parking garage. You get back to the car, find the damage, and open the dash cam expecting an answer — and there is nothing from the hours the vehicle sat there.
The usual assumption is that the camera failed. More often, the camera did exactly what its power supply and settings allowed. Seeing "parking mode" on a spec sheet does not mean a camera keeps recording indefinitely after the ignition turns off.
Parked recording is a chain: power → parking mode → trigger → storage. Every link has to hold, and a break anywhere produces the same empty folder.
Does a dash cam record when the car is off?
Sometimes. The answer depends first and foremost on whether the dash cam is still receiving electricity once the vehicle is shut down.
There are three broad ways a camera gets power:
- Ignition or switched power, which is present while the vehicle is running and disappears when it is not.
- Constant battery power, a circuit capable of supplying the camera with the ignition off.
- A dedicated dash-cam battery pack, a separate power reserve that is independent of the vehicle's own battery.

Why your dash cam may stop recording when you park
Most parked-recording problems are electrical rather than digital. It helps to know the three roles involved, described by function rather than by wire color.
ACC / switched power
Power available when the vehicle's ignition state indicates the car is running. It is the reason a camera reliably starts when you start the engine — and the reason it stops when you switch off.
BATT / constant power
A circuit able to supply power while the ignition is off. This is what makes parked recording physically possible at all.
Ground
The electrical return path. Without it, nothing works.
Many parking-capable hardwire kits use both switched and constant inputs. The constant input keeps the camera alive; the switched input tells the system whether the vehicle is running, so the camera can transition into parking mode rather than treating a stationary car as a stopped drive.
Wire colors are not standardized. Different manufacturers and kits use different conventions, and assuming a color means a particular function is how installations go wrong. Trigger choice has consequences. Impact-only recording will not capture someone inspecting your car and walking away. Motion detection may fill a card in a busy garage. Time-lapse covers long periods but at reduced detail. There is no single correct setting; there is only the setting that matches where you park.

A hardwire kit uses the vehicle's own electrical system and should use an appropriate low-voltage protection strategy where the hardware supports one. A battery pack creates a separate reserve for the dash cam, which protects the vehicle battery, but has a finite capacity and must be recharged.
Installation involves the vehicle's electrical system. Do not probe, modify or tap circuits without the appropriate knowledge and tools — an incorrect connection can affect vehicle systems as well as the camera.
Can parking mode drain your car battery?
Yes. A dash cam drawing power while the engine is off consumes stored vehicle battery energy, unless it is powered from a separate source.
That is why parking-capable hardware usually includes protection of some kind:
- A low-voltage cutoff, which stops drawing power once the measured voltage falls to a configured level.
- A parking timer, which ends parked recording after a set duration.
- A dedicated battery pack, which removes the vehicle battery from the equation entirely.
There is no single cutoff voltage that is correct everywhere. The appropriate setting depends on the hardware, the vehicle, the battery's age and condition, the climate and the manufacturer's instructions. Manufacturers such as Garmin, VIOFO and BlackVue document their own recommended values and behavior for their own kits, and those are the numbers to follow.
The protection that saves your battery can also be the reason there is no footage. "The camera stopped" does not automatically mean the camera malfunctioned — it may have shut down exactly as designed, before the incident happened.

How to test your parking mode before you need it
A test takes a few minutes and answers the question that specifications cannot.

Can loop recording delete parking footage?
It can. Dash cams commonly reuse storage: once the card is full, the oldest unprotected file is overwritten by new video. Protected or event files are usually handled differently, but how long they survive — and whether a parking clip is protected at all — depends on the camera and its settings.
That matters most in the hours after something happens. If the camera keeps running on the same card, the clip you need may be the next one replaced. Where practical, stop unnecessary recording, check the parking, event and protected folders on every channel, and copy anything relevant off the card before anything else. If an incident already happened
If the footage might exist, the priority is to stop putting it at risk. Minimize unnecessary recording onto the same storage until the relevant files have been checked and backed up.
Look in every place a parked recording can land:
- Normal recordings around the relevant time.
- Parking folders, which are often stored separately.
- Event, emergency or protected folders.
- The front channel.
- The rear channel.
- Side channels, where the camera has them.
