Dash Cam Didn't Record the Accident? Here's What to Check First

If your dash cam shows footage before and after a collision — but the accident itself appears to be missing — do not immediately assume the video is gone. Event folders, loop recording, SD-card problems, power loss and recording settings can all make important footage difficult to find.

If the accident just happened, do this first

You get home after an accident and open the dash cam footage.

The drive is there. The minutes leading toward the collision are there.

Then there is a gap. The next recording starts after the impact. The moment you bought the camera to capture is the one moment you cannot find.

Before assuming the footage is permanently gone, it is worth understanding how your camera stores recordings. Dash cams may separate normal driving footage from impact-triggered events. Some use different folders for protected clips. Some overwrite older files through loop recording. Parking recording may depend on an entirely different power setup. And continuous writing to a microSD card can eventually create storage problems.

"My dash cam didn't record it" and "I can't find the recording" are not always the same problem. This guide starts there.

First determine which problem you actually have

Four very different situations produce the same experience of opening a folder and finding nothing. They call for different responses, and treating one as another is how recoverable footage gets lost.

1. Check the event, emergency or protected folder

Start here. When a driver finds footage before and after a collision but nothing in between, the impact clip has frequently been filed separately rather than lost.

Many dash cams organize recordings into categories rather than one continuous timeline. When a G-sensor detects a sudden change in motion, or when a driver presses a manual protect button, the camera may move or copy that clip into a separate area so that routine loop recording does not reuse it. Depending on the manufacturer, an impact-triggered recording may appear under names such as:

  • Event
  • Emergency
  • Protected
  • Locked
  • Driving Event
  • Parking Event

These names are not universal, and neither is the behavior behind them. Some cameras leave the event clip in place and simply flag it. Some duplicate it. Some only create an event file when the sensor threshold is met, which a low sensitivity setting or a glancing impact may not trigger. Check your camera's manual or app before concluding the recording is missing.

Look in more than one place: the camera's own screen, its mobile app and the card itself when read on a computer can each present a different view of the same storage.

This confusion is common enough that driver forums are full of it — which tells you the problem is real, not that any particular forum answer applies to your model. Your manual is the authority for your camera.

2. Check every camera channel

Multi-channel systems typically save each direction as its own file or stream — front, rear, cabin, and side channels where fitted. An event can be plainly visible on one channel and effectively absent from another.

  • A rear-end impact is often clearest from the rear channel.
  • A lane-change collision may happen almost entirely beside the vehicle.
  • A parking incident may appear on a side channel rather than the front.
  • Cabin channels can record audio and reactions that help establish timing.

Match files by timestamp rather than by their position in a list — channels are often stored in separate folders and sorted independently. Save every angle that covers the period, not just the one that looks most dramatic.

3. Look for a recording gap between clips

Continuous recording is generally written as a series of shorter files rather than one long one — commonly one, three or five minutes each, depending on the camera and its settings. That makes files manageable and makes loop recording possible.

It also means an incident can fall awkwardly around a file boundary. Drivers may see:

  • A file ending shortly before impact.
  • Another file beginning shortly afterward.
  • An event clip sitting in a different folder entirely.
  • A damaged, unusually small or incomplete file between the two.

Not every camera produces a visible gap at these boundaries, and implementation varies by model and firmware — some handle the transition with a buffer, others less gracefully. The practical point is the same either way: preserve the clips on both sides of the missing period. They establish the approach, the aftermath and the timeline, and they are often the part a reviewer finds most useful.

4. Check whether loop recording overwrote the file

Loop recording is how a dash cam keeps running indefinitely on finite storage. When the card fills, many cameras replace the oldest unprotected recordings with newer footage rather than stopping.

A full card usually does not mean the camera stopped. It usually means the camera started reusing space.

Protected and event files commonly follow different rules and are excluded from that cycle — but how much space is reserved for them, and what happens once that area is full, differs between models. On some cameras the oldest protected files are eventually recycled too.

If the collision happened recently and the clip was never protected, continued driving reduces the options available for preserving it.

Where a file appears to have already gone, read recovering deleted or overwritten dash cam footage before running any software against the card. The precautions matter more than the tool.

5. Inspect the microSD card

A dash cam writes near-continuously to flash storage, often in a vehicle that swings between freezing and very hot. That is a demanding workload, which is why Garmin's support documentation recommends high-endurance cards designed for repeated overwriting in these conditions, and why the SD Association publishes endurance and performance classes describing sustained-recording ratings.

Symptoms that can point toward storage as a contributing cause include:

  • Clips missing from otherwise continuous periods.
  • The recording indicator appearing normal while files are absent.
  • Corrupted or unplayable video.
  • Repeated gaps at similar intervals.
  • Card errors or format prompts from the camera.
  • An inability to save new footage.

None of this proves the card was at fault in your case. Storage failure is one possible cause among several, and a card can also fail as a symptom of something else, such as a power problem interrupting writes. If you suspect the card and the footage still matters, set it aside rather than reusing it.

Seven reasons a dash cam may miss an accident

Almost every case of missing accident footage traces back to one of these — and several can occur together.

Stored in another folder

An impact-triggered clip is moved out of the normal recording timeline into an event, emergency, protected or locked area.

The event was captured by the rear, cabin or a side channel while the front file shows nothing useful.

Continuous recording is split into files, and the incident can land near a boundary or inside a file that never finished writing.

As storage fills, unprotected recordings are replaced by newer footage. Continued driving keeps that cycle running.

Flash storage under constant rewriting can corrupt files or fail to save them, sometimes without an obvious warning.

A dislodged connector, damaged cable or electrical cut-out during impact can end a recording mid-file.

Recording disabled, sensitivity set low, or parking mode not supplied with the power it needs.

6. Determine whether the camera lost power

If a camera loses power during an impact, or while it is in the middle of writing a video file, the last recording can end abruptly, be incomplete, or fail to close properly and become unplayable.

Possible causes include:

  • A power connector dislodged by the impact.
  • A damaged or partially seated cable.
  • A vehicle electrical shutdown or blown fuse.
  • An accessory socket that cuts power in certain ignition states.
  • Battery-protection or power-management behavior cutting supply.

Cameras differ in how they handle this. Some include a capacitor or small internal reserve intended to finish writing the current file; others do not. Check the connector and cable visually, and note anything that looks disturbed — it is part of the incident record. Leave electrical diagnosis and any hardwiring work to a qualified installer.

7. Check parking mode separately

A camera that records reliably while driving may not continue recording once the engine is off. Parking recording is a different feature with different requirements.

Continuous parking recording generally depends on some combination of:

  • A power source that stays live with the ignition off.
  • Compatible hardwiring with a voltage cutoff, or a dedicated battery pack.
  • Supported power management on the camera.
  • Parking mode actually enabled in settings.
  • Motion or impact sensitivity set so the event is detected.

Seeing "parking mode" in a product description does not mean the feature is working automatically in every installation.

What if the footage is corrupted rather than missing?

Corruption looks different from absence. Signs include:

  • A file that exists but will not open.
  • A file size that looks wrong for its duration.
  • A player reporting a damaged or unsupported file.
  • Video that stops abruptly partway through.
  • A final clip that never completed.

The conservative approach protects your options:

  • Preserve the original card and stop recording to it.
  • Copy the corrupted file before attempting anything with it.
  • Work on the copy, never the original.
  • Do not format the card, and avoid repair tools that write to it.
  • Consider a specialist data-recovery service where the evidence genuinely matters.

What if the dash cam truly did not record the accident?

Missing dash cam footage does not mean there is no other evidence. It means the record now has to be built from more than one source.

Once you are reasonably confident no usable footage exists, the most productive thing you can do is move quickly to everything else, because several of these sources also expire.

  • Photographs of vehicle damage, positions and the surrounding scene.
  • Any phone video taken at the time, including by passengers.
  • Witness names and contact details.
  • Passenger observations, written down while they are fresh.
  • Nearby business cameras, which often retain footage only for days.
  • Residential security cameras, where owners are willing to help.
  • Traffic or municipal cameras, where such footage is available at all.
  • The other driver's dash cam, if one was fitted.
  • Location and time records that establish where you were.
  • The police report and any incident or case number.
  • Insurance claim records and written correspondence.

There is no guarantee that third-party footage exists or will be released. Asking early, politely and specifically — with a date, a time window and a location — gives the best chance.

Should you keep driving with the same memory card?

It depends on what you are still hoping to retrieve. If everything you need is already copied and backed up, ordinary use is fine. If footage may have been deleted or corrupted and still matters, minimize additional writes to that card until you have decided whether to attempt recovery.

The practical sequence:

  • Preserve and copy every clip you can already access.
  • Back those copies up in a second location.
  • Stop unnecessary recording to the card where that is practical.
  • Swap in a different card if you need the camera running in the meantime.

Why didn't my dash cam record my accident?
In most cases the recording was made but stored somewhere unexpected — an event, emergency, protected or parking folder, or a different camera channel. Can a bad SD card cause missing dash cam footage?
It is one possible cause, not a certainty. Dash cams write continuously to flash storage in a hot or cold vehicle, and manufacturers such as Garmin recommend high-endurance cards for that workload. A card nearing the end of its useful life can produce symptoms including absent clips, corrupted or unplayable video, repeated gaps and card errors — sometimes while the camera's recording indicator still looks normal.
Can deleted dash cam footage be recovered?
Sometimes, and the odds are usually best when writing to the card stops immediately. Recovery is not guaranteed: it depends on whether the data has been overwritten, the condition of the card and the file system, and the tools used. Does a dash cam record if the car is off?
Only if it is both powered and configured to. A camera on an accessory socket that cuts power with the ignition simply stops. Continuous parking recording generally depends on a suitable power source — hardwiring with voltage cutoff, a dedicated battery pack, or an equivalent supported arrangement — plus parking mode being enabled. A product listing that mentions parking mode does not mean the feature is active in a given installation.
What should I do if there is no dash cam footage after my accident?
Shift to the evidence that still exists. Photograph the vehicles, damage and scene, save any phone video, collect witness contact details, note nearby businesses or homes with cameras that may have covered the location, ask whether the other driver had a camera, and keep the police report, claim numbers and correspondence. No single file has to carry the whole record of what happened.
